Volunteer Naturalist

Location: Maine and New Hampshire

Volunteer naturalists draw on their own expertise to provide outreach in AMC lodges and backcountry huts. They help guests with activity planning and offer advice about hiking trails, outdoor gear, and backcountry safety. Naturalists also lead guided walks and host evening programs focused on outdoor topics related to their location.

Program Volunteers & Evening Speakers

Location: Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire

Program volunteers help with walk-on programs by leading short guided hikes or nature walks. They also engage with guests using hands-on educational displays at Table Talks, lead activities, and host evening speaker events.

Volunteer Trip Leaders

Location: Volunteers decide oOpportunities range from local to international trips. 

Whether out on a day trip or leading a backcountry expedition, trip leaders take on many roles at once, from decision-making and group dynamics to risk management and conservation practices. Trip leaders are required to be AMC members and possess experience and proficiency in their selected activity. Not only will you provide a much-needed service to your community, but you’ll also make many life-long friendships as an AMC trip leader.

Volunteer-led Camps & Cabins

Location: Echo Lake Camp, Cold River Camp, Harvard Cabin, Knubble Bay Camp and Beal Island, Ponkapoag Camp, Northwest Camp, Fire Island Camp, August Camp, Three Mile Island Camp

From Knubble Bay in Maine to New York’s Long Island, groups of AMC volunteers manage a series of camps and cabins in beautiful settings offering a range of amenities. From full-service and seasonal camps to year-round and self-service options, these camps and cabins depend on volunteers to support these unique places.

Information Volunteers

Location: Mohican, Harriman, Cardigan, Highland, Pinkham, Huts, Hermit Lake Shelters, and Guyot Campsite

Information volunteers greet guests upon arrival, familiarize them with the facility, and offer advice about hiking trails, outdoor gear, and activity programming. They provide information about conservation and natural history, promote AMC membership, and lead indoor programs and nature walks.

Trail Volunteers

Location: Staff and volunteer led trail work opportunities are availble throughout AMC's region from Maine to Virginia.

Our staff works with volunteers every year to maintain, build, and repair trails. By volunteering for trail work, you combine your passion for being outdoors with protecting the environment. Give back to the trails you enjoy with this hands-on opportunity.
